Sometimes a special piece of clothing can make your day. It can also be the difference between feeling good and feeling bad about yourself. For many, shoes can be the deciding factor. Your footwear is an investment in both time and money – but I’ll tell you right now, if you’re looking for something that will last, don’t go for something that’s just going to look good or be acceptable because “everyone else has it”. If you want a pair of shoes that will last, follow these tips.
1) Go to the right store
If you go into any old shoe store looking for the most comfortable shoes possible, you’re not gonna find them. You need to go to a speciality store – running stores, hiking stores and so forth. These places will be able to sell you the kind of footwear that can handle whatever you’re going to put it through.
2) Get the right fit
Even if you go into one of those specialist stores, not everything they have will be comfortable just because it looks good. You need to get the right size for YOUR feet, not anyone else’s. And if you have wide feet or narrow feet, make sure you get something that fits your type of foot well.
3) A shoe is made up of many parts
It might surprise you to know that shoes are actually made up of at least three different layers – the outsole, midsole and upper. The best kind of shoe that you can get will have materials that are breathable throughout these layers.
4) Make sure it’s suited for what you’re doing
For example, if you’re just walking around town, you should probably go with something flat. If, however, you’re running in the park, then maybe it’s best to go with something that has some kind of support. Also, remember that just because a shoe is called “running” doesn’t mean you can do any running in them – they are made for running on certain surfaces or distances. If you have knee issues, consider getting shoes made specifically for people with knee issues. There are shoes out there for different kinds of people with different kinds of problems – the best thing to do is ask a specialist.
5) Consider the materials
The materials that make up your shoe will determine whether or not it’s going to be worth the money you’re paying for it, so consider something that won’t wear down within a few months. Leather, rubber and certain kinds of fabric make good materials for shoes that will last – just check the labels!
6) Don’t buy it just because everyone else has it
The fact of the matter is that Nike makes their shoes to be bought by as many people as possible, but that doesn’t mean they fit all those people well. Adidas, for example, makes shoes that are designed to fit the foot of the individual who is wearing them. So if you have a friend with an amazing pair of Nike’s but they look like they give her blisters, consider checking out others.
There truly is no “one size fits all” when it comes to footwear, but if you follow these steps, you should end up with a pair of shoes that are perfect for you.
